January 27, 2012 - Learning More About Literacy, Together
January 27 is National Family Literacy Day and, to mark the occasion, the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists wants to encourage parents to read and write with their children and engage in fun literacy activities. By reading to children, parents are actively keeping their own skills sharp while, at the same time, strengthening the relationship between families which, in turn, encourages lifelong learning.

Integration within ones community can present challenges as persons with disabilities may encounter many disadvantages in society and are often subjected to stigma and discrimination.
November 20, 2011 - CASLPA Members Help Children Cultivate Speech, Language and Hearing Skills
National Child’s Day - The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists believes every child deserves the right to communication. This year’s theme for National Child’s Day is The Right to the Enjoyment of the Highest Attainable Standard of Health. In recognition of this day, CASLPA highlights the vital role speech-language pathologists, audiologists and supportive personnel play in the early detection and intervention of speech, language and hearing disorders in infants and children.
November 10, 2011 - CASLPA “Remembering” Speech, Language and Hearing Health of Canada’s Veterans on November 11
Veterans’ Week, November 5-11 - Every year in November, Canadians express their appreciation and support for the nearly 600,000 Canadian Forces (CF) veterans. Providing health care services to these veterans, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) works in partnership with health care authorities and providers to deliver a range of health care services including speech-language pathology and audiology.
October 22, 2011 - CASLPA Celebrates Sounds, Syllables and Flow of Speech
International Stuttering Awareness Day - Last year’s highly acclaimed film, The King’s Speech, focused on King George VI’s struggle with stuttering and the importance of speech therapy to treat his speech disorder. Stuttering is a chronic communication disorder that involves disruption in the normal flow of rhythm of speech and according to The Speech and Stuttering Institute, affects approximately 1 in 100 people of all ages.
October 19, 2011 - Early Diagnosis is Key: CASLPA Helps Spread Autism Awareness
Reported cases of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have increased by 600 per cent in the past 20 years, according to the Center for Disease Control in the United States. Evidence suggests at least one in every 110 Canadian children struggles with a form of autism. While there have been important advancements in the way we care for and educate individuals with ASD, more research needs to be done to develop better treatments and interventions.
September 21, 2011 - CASLPA Members Support Thousands of Canadians Living with Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias
World Alzheimer’s Day - Approximately 500,000 Canadians live with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia (ADRD), according to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. Based on current incident and prevalence rates, the number of people in Canada living with ADRD will more than double to 1.1 million within 25 years. This figure will amount to approximately 2.5 per cent of Canada’s entire population.
September 8, 2011 - CASLPA Supports Literacy for Everyone, Everywhere
Canada is a top-ranked country in terms of literacy levels, but almost half of Canadian adults have difficulties with reading and numbers, according to the Movement for Canadian Literacy. To improve literacy levels, it is important for Canadians to develop literacy skills at a young age.

July 25, 2011 - New Executive Director to Lead Speech-Language and Hearing Professionals
The board of directors of the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Joanne Charlebois to the position of executive director effective July 25, 2011. Mrs. Charlebois has 30 years of not-for-profit association experience. She most recently served as director, marketing & communications of the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) for the past nine years where she was responsible for rebranding the institute and overseeing development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan.
June 23, 2011 - CASLPA Supports Private Members’ Bill Seeking to Ensure Fair Access to Disability Tax Credit
The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) is pleased to announce its support for Peter Julian’s (MP for New-Westminster Burnaby) private members’ bill C-246, tabled yesterday. The bill seeks to amend the Income Tax Act relative to hearing impairment; a change that seeks to ensure all eligible individuals with hearing disabilities have fair access to the disability tax credit.

March 23, 2011 - Budget Misses on Childhood Hearing
The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists expresses its disappointment at the absence of dedicated funding in the federal budget for universal newborn hearing screening programs (UNHS) to detect permanent childhood hearing loss (PCHL). “By not providing dedicated funding for a UNHS program, they are missing a real opportunity to improve care while saving money,” said CASLPA audiology board director, Dr. Sean Kinden.

Integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life in their communities is critically important. Whether a child stutters, a teenager has difficulties reading, or a senior exhibits significant hearing loss, these and related communication limitations affect the social inclusiveness of people of all ages.
